In 2018, directors and film producers Mélanie Carrier and Olivier Higgins received support from the SODEC, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and Québec City to develop their feature-length documentary Deep inside humanity. In this film, they will travel the world to document the first year of school of children living in very contrasting environment.

RESUME

It is back to school in four schools, on four continents. In the Himalayan heights as in the megalopolis of Mexico, in the countryside of Haïti as in a multiethnic district of Montreal. A first walk to the school or a first bus, a first recreation and a first snack with children that we do not know. Then is the set up of a routine: rules and discipline, homework, laughter in the corridor, a first reprimand, some victories and disappointments, examinations and finally, finally the holidays … Deep inside humanity draws us into the daily life and the universe of four children from very contrasting backgrounds who live, each in their own way, their first year of school; this pivotal year in which the world of reading and writing opens up to us. This year filled with promises and disappointments. Whether at home in family intimacy, at school in the silence of a math exercise or on the way home, this film takes a sensitive and thoughtful look at our relationship with education and at the same time to our way of seeing the world.
